“If I cancel Rakuten Mobile, will the monthly fee be calculated on a daily prorated basis?”
“What are the administrative cancellation fees and billing schedule after cancellation?”
When considering canceling Rakuten Mobile or switching to another carrier, it is very important to correctly understand the billing settlement and fee structure.
This article explains Rakuten Mobile’s fee calculation method at cancellation, the “cancellation administrative fee” incurred for cancellations within 1 year, the timing of billing confirmation after cancellation, and how to handle unpaid charges.
1. Plan Fees in the Cancellation Month Are Settled Based on “Data Usage” (No Daily Proration)
When canceling Rakuten Mobile (Rakuten Saikyo Plan), no daily prorated calculation is applied to the basic fee even if you cancel mid-month.
The plan fee for the cancellation month is settled based on the amount corresponding to the data usage up to the cancellation date.
Data Usage Fee Steps
- 0GB to 3GB: ¥1,078 (tax included)
- Over 3GB to 20GB: ¥2,178 (tax included)
- Over 20GB (unlimited): ¥3,278 (tax included)
Therefore, even if you cancel on the 1st day of the month, you will be charged the full amount (minimum ¥1,078~) based on the data consumed up to that day. Before canceling, regularly check your data usage to avoid moving up to a higher fee step.
2. Watch Out for the “Cancellation Administrative Fee” Incurred Within 1 Year
For lines that started service on or after April 1, 2025, a rule has been introduced where a cancellation administrative fee may apply depending on the period since contract start.
Conditions for Cancellation Administrative Fee
- Who is affected: Those who started using the line on or after April 1, 2025, and cancel (or terminate the contract) within 1 year from the start of use
- Cancellation administrative fee: One month’s minimum monthly plan fee (maximum ¥1,078, tax included)
※ If 1 year or more has passed since the start of use, no cancellation administrative fee applies (¥0). Also, those who started using the line on or before March 31, 2025 are not subject to the new policy.
3. Billing Timing and Payment Schedule After Cancellation
Even after completing the cancellation procedure with Rakuten Mobile, billing will continue.
Charges for the Cancellation Month Are Billed “The Following Month”
The usage fees for the month of cancellation are billed the month after cancellation.
- Example: If you complete the cancellation procedure in August ➡ The billing confirmation and payment for August usage will be in September.
The specific payment date and billing confirmation timing will vary depending on your registered payment method (credit card, debit card, or bank transfer).
Main Cases Where Billing Continues After Cancellation
Depending on your contract details and cancellation situation, billing may continue into the month after cancellation and beyond.
- When installment payments for a product (device) remain
- When call charges, SMS sending fees, and other usage-based billing data are reflected with a delay
- Various options not canceled / billing cycle cutoff date issues
4. If Payment Cannot Be Collected (Paying Unpaid Charges)
If there are charges that could not be collected due to insufficient balance or credit card errors, Rakuten Mobile will send you a notice/notification regarding unpaid charges.
Steps to Check and Pay Unpaid Charges
- Log in to “my Rakuten Mobile” within the “Rakuten Link” app (or the web version).
- Open the home screen or the “Usage Report & Payment” menu and check for any unpaid charges.
- Select your payment method (credit card, debit card, or Rakuten Points payment on the my Rakuten Mobile screen, or convenience store payment, invoice payment, etc.).
Leaving unpaid charges unaddressed may result in risks such as line suspension or forced cancellation, so please complete payment promptly when you receive a notification.
Summary: Checklist to Review Before and After Cancellation
- Data usage: Complete the cancellation procedure before moving up to the next fee step
- Period of use: If canceling within 1 year under a contract from April 2025 or later, note that a fee of up to ¥1,078 (tax included) applies
- Post-cancellation billing: Since billing occurs in the month after cancellation, maintain the validity of your registered payment account/card
Understand the cancellation rules and procedures correctly, and proceed with a smooth cancellation or carrier switch!
